Well the transmission was set on a big metal catch pan and cleaned with degreaser and a few tooth brushes, a round wire brush and a regular wire brush. After a few hours of scrubbing, here is the result. Looks like new. The dark spots are discolorations in the metal, the transmission is completely clean.
I put the water temperature sender on the buffing wheel and polished it up. Then I wrapped it with teflon tape and put it in. Next I cleaned the front crank pulley with a wire wheel down to the bare metal, primed and painted it.
